Our recommendation:
We recommend you come over to Brighton the evening before the course day and get settled at a hotel or B&B accommodation near the hospital. This has been the preferred option
suggested by the delegates at earlier courses. Travel to Brighton on a weekend has a high risk of delay from roadworks, and rail works.
Travel:
We recommend the use of public transport to come to the course. The nearest train station is Brighton. There are frequent trains from London Victoria to Brighton. Other direct trains to
Brighton are from London Bridge and London St Pancras. The County hospital (that is what the main hospital is popularly known as) is about 1.5 miles from the train station. The number
7 bus will take you to the County Hospital. The bus would leave you in front of the main hospital building – the children’s hospital is behind the main hospital, and it is a 5-minute walk
from the bus stop along the road that goes up by the side of the main hospital building (A short video will be circulated near the day to help).
If you are taking a taxi from the train station, please ask to drop you at the Children’s Hospital outpatient entrance.
PLEASE NOTE: There is an ongoing disruption to the train services, so please travel with sufficient time to spare for train delays.
The nearest airport to Brighton is Gatwick airport. There are regular trains from the Gatwick South Terminal to Brighton train station and there are taxi/bus options from the Brighton train
station to the County Hospital.
Parking:
Unfortunately, there is only limited and restricted street parking surrounding the hospital. We will strongly advise against attempting to park in the Hospital Car Park if you arrive after 8
am. This has very few spaces, and once in the queue it is not possible to exit the queue.
There is an all-day pay and display parking on the south side of the A259 seaside road. Please be aware of Resident Parking Bays. Parking is strictly monitored even on the weekends.
Parking is also available at the Brighton Marina Multi-storey car park (BN2 5WB). This provides 1500 free car parking spaces, but it is situated 1 mile from the hospital. The number
7 bus is available from near to the car park to the hospital. It runs every 10 minutes and costs £6.00 for an all-day saver return ticket. Please note that although this car park has a board
stating ‘Free parking for 4 hours’ at present there are no charges at all for 24-48 hours or more.
If you arrive the previous evening, and parking is not available at the hotel, you may be able to park in the multistorey hospital car park opposite the Children’s Hospital in the late evening
and leave the car there for your entire stay – the parking charges are £11.50 for 12 hours and £18.20 for 24 hours.
The courses starts at 8.30 am (registration) and goes on to 5.30 pm.
Travel tips from delegates:
- Maon Hotel near the hospital is a good place and just 5 minutes walking distance.
- Parking in the hospital multi-storey costs £36.40 if you come on Saturday and leave the car there till the end of the course on Sunday. Which is cheaper than the car parking for some of
the hotels and the ones along the seafront. - The hospital car park on North Road directly next to children’s outpatients was £18 per day but on both days I put my ticket in the exit barrier to pay contactless (as it said to do on the machine) and it just let me out without paying with no option to pay! Maybe due to electric charging or something??! Or alternative driving tip – if there are no trains listed, check again closer to time – it turns out I didn’t need to drive 6 hrs solo as trains were back on!!)
- Gatwick to Brighton by coach £9 one way. From Brighton coach station to hospital 20 minute walk
- I stayed at Little Gem serviced apartment (thru booking.Com) opposite to Eye hospital. 5 minute walk to hospital
- Stayed with my family at Best Wester Princes Marine Hotel, large family room sea view, free parking, took bus to get around the whole weekend which was very convenient. Thanks for a
great course! So well organized and enjoyed the delicious lunches. - I would say avoid the Travelodge at the seafront. It has a nightclub next door, which is loud and popular with stag and hen nights.
- I stayed in Atlantic seafront, the view is priceless, clean and staff (Leo) is friendly. Thanks Venu for the amazing course Perfect course for beginners and very inspiring to meet so many paediatricians/neonatologists with a passion for cardiology
- I stayed at the Ibis which is 2 mins from the train station. I got the Number 7 bus right outside hotel that took me to the front of the main hospital in 10 mins
- Walking distance from the coach station, I took uber to the hospital but one I walk 20 min
- Maon Hotel near the hospital is a good place and just 5 minutes walking distance.
- I used booking.com for lower prices.
Electric car travel tips:
Park on level 7 of the multi-storey on North Road. Chargers do not use contactless via phone bring actual card, or download the “Blink” app before travelling (no 4G in car park). Try a different charger if doesn’t work as some broken (no outward sign); charge early as non-electric cars fill spaces.
